Grandma Muggy

On our recent trip out west we visited Becky's Grandma Muggy in Lincoln, NE.  We had been told she had cancer.  I don't remember what kind, but it wasn't very aggressive and treatments were possibly as harsh as the cancer itself, especially for 90+ year old patients, so it wasn't being treated aggressively.  Grandma Muggy didn't even know she had cancer!  In kind of an awkward moment during our visit Becky mentioned that we'd heard she was sick.

"I am?!"

"We heard you have cancer."

"I do?!"  Awkward silence.  "You'd think someone would tell me."

She laughed it off with good humor.  She always laughed so easily.  We had a very nice visit with her and she seemed to be fine.

Not long after we got home from our vacation we got a phone call from Becky's mother saying Grandma Muggy had been found collapsed on the ground by nursing home employees and was possibly doing poorly.  A few days later she was in hospice and a few days after that she died.

You know, when someone is over 90 you kind of expect that their death is more imminent than most people's.  Especially when they have identified health issues.  But man, it was still kind of a shock just how sudden she went from doing all right to gone.

Last weekend Becky and Tabby drove down to Lincoln with her brother Mike to go to the funeral.  Funerals are such a mixed thing.  It's a sad reason to get together, but wow, so many relatives are there!  And that's awesome.

It ended up being a very nice time.

Some of the family, including Becky, stayed at Grandma Muggy's old house.

They did some sightseeing at the zoo and the Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge.

And the funeral itself was very nice.
